· Foundational Math Tutoring in the Pflugerville Area

Perhaps decimals, fractions, and place value have never quite clicked for your student. Maybe numbers themselves, counting, comparing, and basic operations are still a challenge.

It's frustrating and disheartening for your child, and also for you as a parent. The pressure to just get through today's class or homework assignment is real. And the tension is real.

Let's work together to turn things around: we'll make sense of math, build confidence, and improve attitudes.

My sessions are friendly and relaxed, with engaging visual and hands-on number experiences. We'll step back as much as necessary to fill in gaps and address misunderstandings, proceeding at whatever pace feels right.

What educators call 'productive struggle' has a place in mathematics, but now is probably not the time for your child. Instead, our sessions will focus on ease and fluency.

· About Me

Over decades of teaching Spanish, I’ve integrated basic math into almost every lesson. Everyday vocabulary naturally connects to numbers: more and less, bigger and smaller, here and there, near and far. We worked with time, dates, shapes, patterns, comparison, and quantity, always connecting concepts with visual representations and words.

Now I’m applying those same teaching skills and materials more directly to building number sense.

I’ve created a library of support videos for my students, and watching one is a simple way for you to see my work and meet me virtually.

This 11-minute introduction to decimals will give you a strong sense of how I see numbers, how I design number experiences, my personality, and how I work with students, regardless of level or topic.

It's meant to be engaging, not entertaining, and animated, not cartoony. You'll notice careful sequencing, clear examples, and an emphasis on listening and mental visualization. It's designed to strengthen attention span as much as understanding.

Watching it from beginning to end will give you the best sense of the structure and intention of the lesson.

· Technology in Learning

Most students would benefit from less screen time, and also from better screen time.

In many on-line math programs, gamification stifles instrinic motivation. Bright color schemes, busy layouts, and always-visible menus are distracting and hamper learning. Even the font size matters: many math programs display math problems in very tiny fonts.

For my students, I've created an extensive library of interactive and responsive browser-based tools that support clarity and fluency in math. They're straightforward, effective, and efficient, providing more number experiences in less time.

We'll use these tools in our lessons, and students can access them between lessons for additional practice. (for tablet, laptop, and desktop)

· Assessment

After you contact me, we'll speak briefly to discuss your student's situation, and schedule a complimentary assessment.

Then you, your student, and I will meet for 30 minutes at the library, your home, or a café, and have a relaxed conversation about numbers and math class.

I'll bring some pictures, cards, some dice, and my laptop. You'll bring some of your student's current assignments and assessments.

Simply the thought of stepping into a busy tutoring center for a tour and assessment can trigger anxiety.
